Rational Travel is here to bring you good news! AirAsia announced today the opening of a new direct flight route “Kaohsiung = Sabah”! This new route will have its inaugural flight on November 17th, with four flights per week, allowing you to easily fly direct from Kaohsiung to Malaysia’s holiday destination Sabah! The best part is that the promotional ticket prices are incredibly sweet, with special fares starting from just 3651 yuan! Really don’t miss out on such a great airfare deal!

Honest caveat: AirAsia’s Kaohsiung launch was 2024-era news; by early 2026 the route has matured and seasonal scheduling has stabilized. The launch promo prices in this article (NT$1,xxx-2,xxx range for short-haul Asia) are historical references — current AirAsia Kaohsiung pricing is 30-50% higher in most months. The strategic framework (Kaohsiung travelers gaining access to budget Asia routes) is still relevant; the specific NT$ amounts need updating with current AirAsia booking-page pricing.
⚠️ Who shouldn’t book AirAsia from Kaohsiung as default
1. Travelers heading to direct-route destinations (Bangkok, KL). AirAsia from Kaohsiung typically routes via KL even for Bangkok — adding 4-6 hours layover. For routes Tigerair / Starlux / EVA / China Airlines fly direct from KHH, the AirAsia connection saving rarely beats the time cost.
2. Time-constrained travelers (work travel, ≤4 night personal trips). AirAsia’s hub-and-spoke model adds 6-12 hours total trip time vs full-service direct. For short trips, this overhead converts theoretical savings into practical losses. Better fit: full-service KHH direct; treat AirAsia Kaohsiung as “longer trips with flexibility” only.
3. Travelers with 23kg+ checked baggage. AirAsia’s per-segment baggage on KHH-KL-onward routings is sold separately, not through-baggage. Add baggage fees both legs and the “savings” disappear. Better fit: full-service direct routes with single through-baggage allowance.

✈️ Flight Price Comparison
The Kaohsiung-AirAsia booking mistake I made on a 2024 Bangkok trip: I’d booked Tigerair KHH-BKK at NT$5,200, then noticed AirAsia’s Kaohsiung-KL-BKK was NT$3,800 — booked the cheaper option. What I missed: AirAsia routed via Kuala Lumpur with 5-hour layover (vs Tigerair’s direct 4-hour flight), my outbound day became a 14-hour transit day instead of arriving Bangkok by lunch. The fare saving NT$1,400; the lost time was roughly half a day. The fix the framework here teaches: for Kaohsiung travelers, AirAsia’s strength is on routes Tigerair doesn’t serve well (Bali, Maldives, Phuket). For routes both serve (Bangkok, KL), Tigerair direct usually beats AirAsia connecting once you factor time cost.

Four flights per week: Monday, Wednesday, Friday, Sunday
Outbound ➡️ Kaohsiung – Sabah: 12:10 – 15:10
Return ⬅️ Sabah – Kaohsiung: 08:20 – 11:15
The only small downside is that the return flight is a bit early, but at this price, coming back early isn’t a big deal at all!
