The cheap-ticket change fee mistake I made: I’d booked Tigerair TPE-Tokyo at NT$5,800 saver-economy thinking ‘I’ll just pay change fee if needed.’ Three weeks before departure I needed to change date by 2 days. Tigerair change fee: NT$3,500 + new fare difference NT$2,200 = NT$5,700 to make a 2-day shift. Total cost: NT$5,800 + NT$5,700 = NT$11,500 vs. EVA full-service refundable economy at NT$8,200. The ‘cheap saving’ became expensive. The fix the framework here teaches: estimate your change probability; if there’s >20% chance of date change, pay NT$2,000-2,500 more upfront for change-flexible fare class.

1. Travelers with date uncertainty (work flexibility, family obligations). Cheap fixed-date fares + likely change = expensive total. Better fit: full-service flexible fare with NT$2,000-2,500 change-flexibility premium.
2. Business travelers with shifting calendars. Work-imposed date changes happen with regular frequency. Pay for flexibility upfront.
