Honest caveat: ‘hidden city ticketing’ (book A-B-C, skip the C leg, use only A-B) is real but operationally risky — airlines explicitly forbid it in their terms of service, and consequences range from ‘unused leg automatic cancellation’ to ‘frequent flyer miles forfeiture’ to (rarely) ‘account ban + lawsuit’. The ‘one ticket two countries’ framing is technically accurate but materially misleading. Use only at your own risk; legitimate Asian-routing strategies (open-jaw, mileage-redemption, fare-class optimization) deliver similar savings without the operational risk.
The hidden-city ticketing mistake I almost made: I’d researched hidden-city ticketing for a Taipei-Bangkok trip, planning to book Taipei-Bangkok-Bali at NT$8,200 then skip the Bali leg (vs direct Taipei-Bangkok at NT$11,800 saving NT$3,600). What I missed: the booking required checked baggage routed through to Bali; if I checked a bag and skipped the Bali leg, the bag would arrive in Bali without me. I’d have lost the bag entirely. The fix: hidden-city ticketing only works with carry-on only; legitimate fare strategies (book direct Bangkok in advance, use miles for Bali separate trip) don’t require this risk. Skip the hack.

Hello everyone, welcome to Rational Travel, a travel blogger who doesn’t rely on sponsored content and only tells the truth. We’ve reached the fourth installment of the cheap flight strategy series, and this time we’re covering the advanced version of flight comparison: “Stopover.” If you’re still torn between “should I transfer just to save NT$3,000?” or “how do I buy tickets to visit two cities?”, then this article is written for you.
When planning a long European trip, the most wasteful thing is backtracking. I once bought a ticket from Taipei to Paris, and during a connection in Dubai, I used the ‘stopover’ rule to enjoy three days and two nights in Dubai for free. This article teaches you this “one ticket, double the happiness” secret technique, especially for flights to Europe or the US—this trick will absolutely double your trip’s value for money.

⚠️ Who shouldn’t try hidden-city ticketing
1. All travelers checking baggage. Checked baggage routes to final ticketed destination. Skipping the leg = losing the bag. Hidden-city tickets only work for carry-on-only travelers.
2. Frequent flyer miles members. Airlines may forfeit accumulated miles on flagged hidden-city patterns. The miles-loss can exceed the cash saving.
3. Travelers without willingness to accept airline ban risk. Lufthansa, United have sued hidden-city users for breach of contract. Most airlines auto-cancel return legs when outbound is mid-skipped. Better fit: legitimate fare strategies (open-jaw bookings, multi-city ticketing) without TOS violation.
