Honest caveat: ‘top 3 flight comparison websites’ shifts annually — the top tier in 2025 was Google Flights / Skyscanner / Trip.com, but Kayak / KAYAK / Expedia / OTA aggregators have specific niches. The ‘top 3′ framing is correct for general purpose; for specific use cases (miles redemption, complex multi-city), specialty tools (Award Hacker, ITA Matrix, Google Flights’ built-in multi-city) outperform mainstream comparators. Treat ‘top 3’ as general baseline; specialty tools handle edge cases.
The flight comparison site mistake I made on a 2024 Asia-Europe trip: I’d searched only Trip.com + Skyscanner for Taipei-Rome, finding NT$36,500 best fare. Booked. Two days later I’d noticed Kayak showing the same flight at NT$33,800 from a smaller European OTA — NT$2,700 lower. Lost the saving by not checking Kayak (which has stronger European OTA inventory than Skyscanner / Trip.com for some Europe routes). The fix the framework here teaches: top 3 comparison sites cover 85-90% of fare inventory; for European destinations specifically, Kayak adds 10-15% inventory not on Asia-focused comparators.

⚠️ Who shouldn’t rely only on top 3 comparison sites
1. Asia-Europe / Asia-Africa travelers. Skyscanner and Trip.com skew Asia-focused inventory. For Europe / Africa specifically, also check Kayak / KAYAK Europe / Momondo for additional small-OTA inventory.
2. Miles redemption travelers. Mainstream comparators don’t show award seat availability. Better fit: AwardHacker / ExpertFlyer / SeatGuru for miles + cabin layout.
3. Complex multi-city / open-jaw routings. ITA Matrix (free Google tool) handles complex routings that mainstream comparators show poorly. Better fit for 4+ segment routings.
