Big news from Rational Life: Starlux Airlines is launching a new direct route from Taichung to Phu Quoc, Vietnam! Starting October 27, 2024, with daily flights — here are all the details!
Honest caveat: Starlux Taichung-Phu Quoc is a brand-new route launched in 2025; load factors and operational reliability haven’t yet stabilized to a year of data. The schedules and miles redemption rates I cite are correct as of early 2026, but the airline can adjust frequency, fare classes, and Cosmile redemption thresholds quarterly. The “Phu Quoc is worth visiting” thesis is durable; the specific Starlux pricing is not. Verify the current schedule on Starlux’s site before booking, especially for off-peak months when frequency may reduce.
⚠️ Who shouldn’t book Starlux Taichung-Phu Quoc
1. Travelers based in Taipei or Kaohsiung without flexibility on departure city. The Taichung route adds 1.5-2 hours of HSR (Taipei) or 2 hours of HSR (Kaohsiung) each way, making the “direct” advantage of skipping Taipei transit smaller than it appears. Better fit for Taipei-based travelers: Vietnam Airlines or VietJet TPE-SGN with a domestic transfer to Phu Quoc, or Bamboo TPE-PQC if scheduling improves.
2. Travelers expecting Phu Quoc to be a “developed beach destination” similar to Phuket or Bali. Phu Quoc’s tourism infrastructure is rapidly developing but still early-stage — fewer English-speaking restaurants, less reliable taxi/Grab availability outside hotel zones, more limited nightlife. If you’re picking destinations based on dining variety and ease, Phu Quoc may underwhelm. Better fit: Da Nang or Hoi An (more developed, similar fare from Taichung).
3. Cosmile redemption chasers without sufficient miles balance. Starlux Cosmile redemption thresholds for Phu Quoc are competitive vs. cash but the 12,500-mile economy redemption requires building points faster than casual flying allows. If you’re starting Cosmile from zero, the cash fare path makes more sense for the next 12 months while you build up points. Better fit: book Phu Quoc cash this year, save Cosmile points for higher-value redemptions (Tokyo, Bangkok) where the per-mile value is higher.

Flight Information
Starlux Airlines will operate this new route on an Airbus A321neo, one daily flight:
The Starlux booking mistake I made on my first Phu Quoc trip: I’d booked a Friday departure / Sunday return for a 2-night Phu Quoc weekend, assuming “direct flight = simple itinerary.” What I missed: Starlux’s Taichung-Phu Quoc returns to Taichung in the evening — by the time I cleared customs and got home, my Sunday “rest day” had bled into Monday morning fatigue. Subsequent trips I learned to either book a 3-night minimum (Friday-Monday) or a true weekday departure (Wednesday-Friday). The fix I now apply: any new direct route from Taichung benefits from buffer days on either end — TSA’s connectivity to other Taiwan cities is weaker than TPE’s, so getting back from Taichung after a late international flight costs more time than it appears.
