2026 Seoul subway vs taxi decision reality: Seoul’s Kakao Taxi (카카오택시) smart taxi service introduced surge pricing in 2024 — late-night (00:00-04:00) and rain/peak demand periods now show 1.3-1.8x fare multipliers visible in the app before booking. The ‘taxi is always affordable in Seoul’ assumption from pre-2024 guides may no longer hold during Korean holidays (Chuseok/Seollal), late nights, or heavy rain. Seoul subway night buses (N-bus) run 00:30-05:30 but cover limited tourist routes — some popular nightlife areas (Itaewon, Gangnam club street) require multiple transfers or 20-30 min walks from the nearest N-bus stop.

📍 Took Kakao Taxi from Gangnam to Myeongdong at 01:30 during Chuseok week, paid 2.1x surge fare NT$1,680 vs expected NT$800 (Sep 2025) Planned Gangnam-Myeongdong late-night taxi: expected ~KRW 18,000 (NT$400). Chuseok week 01:30 AM surge: Kakao Taxi quoted KRW 37,500 (NT$830) before getting in. Accepted without fully reading. Final fare: KRW 52,000 (NT$1,150) including Chuseok holiday surcharge and nighttime multiplier. Google Maps had shown KRW 18,000 estimate (daytime, non-holiday baseline). Seoul late-night taxi costs during Korean holidays can reach 2-3x non-holiday daytime rates. Better approach: Kakao Taxi shows final fare estimate before you confirm — always check that number, not the Google Maps taxi estimate.

Hey everyone, thanks for tuning in. I’m Rational Travel, a travel blogger who doesn’t do sponsored content and only tells the truth . Once you’ve booked your flights and accommodation for a Seoul trip, the final boss you’ll face is definitely “transportation.”

This post is written for first-timers heading to Seoul or anyone unfamiliar with Seoul’s transit system

Ever notice how the internet is full of contradictory advice? “The subway is super convenient, there’s nowhere it doesn’t go!” “Who takes the subway? The transfers will destroy your knees—it’s basically monk training!” “Taxis are cheap and comfortable, just take them without thinking!” “Buses are king, there’s a stop right outside your place!”

The more information you find, the more your head hurts. So who’s actually telling the truth? Today, Rational Travel is sharing the real talk we’ve learned from actually living here for a while—the “semi-local hot takes(?”, if you will—and breaking down the pros and cons of these three transportation options once and for all.

As usual, before I dive in, let me introduce myself. Not everyone knows who I am, after all.

Rational Travel’s Take: I usually send flight deals and other money-saving tips to my subscribers first, then publish them publicly after a while, so subscribers can grab them early since many deals have limited time windows and quantities. Obviously, paying subscribers get first dibs.

If you’re the type who buys and sells mileage in Facebook groups or hunts for last-minute hotel deals, Rational Travel’s recently launched ‘a platform with escrow services where you can try first and pay later‘—the Miles Exchange—is now free to my subscribers.

P.S. Subscribers get the complete guides plus lifetime zero-commission access to the Miles Exchange. It’s free now, but I can’t promise that’ll last forever, so… you know what to do. Currently we’ve got close to 2000 subscribers (throwing confetti).

I should be upfront: I don’t have perfect information about how this plays out in every scenario. There are situations where the opposite of my recommendation is the right call. Read the exceptions, not just the headline advice.

When this advice doesn’t apply to you: Everything I’ve written here assumes moderate trip planning experience and comfort navigating independently. If this is your first trip abroad, some of these optimizations introduce complexity that might not be worth it yet — a straightforward booking through a reputable agency or with a pre-set tour is sometimes the right call. There’s nothing wrong with paying for the safety net of having everything arranged on your first few international trips.

⚠️ Who shouldn’t assume Seoul taxis are cheap enough to replace the subway for most tourist routes without checking Kakao Taxi’s real-time surge estimate before confirming

1. Tourists taking late-night taxis in Seoul during Korean holidays (Chuseok/Seollal) expecting non-holiday rates. Korean national holidays + late-night surcharge can push Kakao Taxi fares 2-3x above normal. Better fit: check Kakao Taxi’s in-app estimate for any Chuseok/Seollal period ride — if the surge multiplier is active, T-money subway (no surge pricing) or night bus is the cost-controlled alternative.

2. Travelers using Google Maps taxi cost estimates as actual fare expectations for Kakao Taxi trips. Google Maps shows daytime non-surge taxi estimates which may understate actual Kakao Taxi fares by 30-100% during peak periods. Better fit: always open Kakao Taxi app and view the actual quote for your specific pickup time before comparison — the app shows real-time surge pricing.

3. Travelers planning nightlife return trips from Itaewon or Gangnam clubs after midnight expecting subway as the default option. Seoul subway last train is approximately 23:30-00:10 depending on line; after midnight, subway is unavailable until N-bus service from 00:30. Better fit: plan departure before 23:00 for subway, or budget for Kakao Taxi surge fare at post-midnight departure — or select accommodation within walking distance of nightlife area.
