Better approach for 30+ day Bali stays: apply for B211A social-cultural visa before departure from Taiwan (Taiwan-Bali visa agencies charge approximately NT$3,500-5,000, handles the queue). Or plan departure before day 30 to avoid extension entirely.

The Ubud transportation problem I didn’t see coming: Grab doesn’t operate in central Ubud — I’d read this somewhere but assumed it was outdated. It wasn’t. I arrived in Ubud at 9pm with heavy luggage and had to negotiate with one of the fixed-price drivers waiting outside the main street. I paid IDR120,000 for a 2km trip because I had no leverage. Always arrange Ubud pickup in advance, or confirm your villa has pickup service included.

Who I wouldn’t push this approach for: If your trip’s success depends on a single property delivering everything (work amenities, dining, spa, on-site activities), pinning your stay to one review — including this one — is risky. Cross-reference at least two recent reviews and the property’s own FAQ before booking. The framework I use here works when you treat hotel choice as one decision among many, not the foundation of the trip.

⚠️ Who shouldn’t plan Bali visa extensions at the airport immigration counter or expect the VoA extension process to be a quick in-and-out visit
1. First-time Bali visitors who plan to extend their VoA without researching the Denpasar Immigration Office queue and half-day time commitment. VoA extensions require an in-person visit to Denpasar Immigration — not the airport. Better fit: if staying 31-60 days, pre-apply for B211A social-cultural visa from Taiwan before departure to avoid the in-country extension queue process.
2. First-time Bali visitors using pre-2024 beginner guides that don’t include the IDR 150,000 Tourism Levy in arrival budget. The Tourism Levy (approximately NT$310) has been mandatory since February 2024 for all international visitors. Better fit: pre-register at lovebali.baliprov.go.id before departure and include NT$310/person in your Bali arrival budget.
3. First-timers planning to rent a motorbike in Bali without prior Southeast Asian motorbike traffic experience. Bali traffic is left-hand drive, motorbike-dominant, and road conditions are inconsistent — numerous tourists are injured annually. Better fit: first-time Bali visitors should use Grab cars for inter-area transport and hire a private driver for day trips (approximately USD 50-70/day all-inclusive) until comfortable with Bali road conditions.
