Rational Travel just heard some exciting news – Taiwan and Finland finally signed an aviation service agreement on February 28, 2025! This is the first aviation cooperation between Taiwan and a Nordic country, with the potential for direct flights from Taipei to Helsinki, Finland’s capital (HEL), with up to 14 flights per week. According to the Civil Aeronautics Administration, both sides can designate multiple airlines to operate flights, which aren’t limited to direct routes but can include intermediate stops, and even enjoy fifth freedom rights. What’s the fifth freedom, you ask? Simply put, it’s something like the “Taipei-Bangkok-Helsinki” route, where the plane can pick up and drop off passengers in Bangkok and continue flying – super flexible!

It’s still unclear how these 14 flights will be divided among China Airlines, EVA Air, Starlux Airlines, or Finland’s Finnair. But Finnair is particularly exciting because while they haven’t flown to Taiwan before, they’ve already established a strong presence in East Asia for years with routes to Tokyo, Osaka, Seoul, Shanghai, Hong Kong, Singapore, and Bangkok. Adding Taipei to this list would be like completing a collection! The flight time from Taipei to Helsinki would be approximately 12-13 hours for a direct flight, which saves time and effort compared to the current common connecting routes (at least 15 hours or more). It’s really perfect for travel enthusiasts.

What’s there to do in Finland? Helsinki isn’t just a transit point – it’s a super chill city in itself with architecturally stunning buildings, Nordic-style cafes, and fresh salmon cuisine. Plus, Finland is a great place to see the Northern Lights. In winter, you can head straight to Lapland, and in summer, you get incredibly long daylight hours to play non-stop. On Taiwan’s side, China Airlines, EVA Air, and Starlux are all likely to compete for routes, especially since this line has huge tourism potential and significant cargo market opportunities. If Finnair joins the competition, they might deploy their A350 aircraft, which offers excellent comfort and fuel efficiency.

Rational Travel’s Take: Direct Flight to Helsinki – I’m Already Daydreaming About Salmon and Northern Lights!

When Rational Travel saw this news, the first reaction was: “Finally, no more leg-numbing connections!” Right now, getting to Northern Europe usually means making a detour through Tokyo, Bangkok, or Hong Kong, burning time and money in the process. With a direct flight to Helsinki just 12 hours away, it really feels like a win. However, how these 14 flights will be distributed hasn’t been finalized yet. Rational Travel’s guess is that China Airlines and EVA Air will definitely compete for it, since they have extensive long-haul experience. Starlux might also want a piece of the action, as new routes are a great opportunity to showcase their capabilities. If Finnair flies in, they should leverage their Nordic experience and turn Taipei into a new hub in East Asia – just thinking about it is impressive!

The fifth freedom rights have Rational Travel particularly excited. For example, on a “Taipei-Bangkok-Helsinki” route, they can still pick up passengers in Bangkok – it’s like getting a buy-one-get-one-free travel package. Rational Travel is already fantasizing about it: getting off the plane first in Bangkok for a bowl of Thai hot and sour soup, then flying to Helsinki to devour salmon and hot chocolate. This kind of mixed itinerary is just perfect. The only question is whether Finnair will actually come to Taiwan, since they’re already well-established in East Asia. Whether they’ll make Taipei their next target is something Rational Travel can only wait and hope for.

For Rational Travel, Helsinki is basically a dream destination. The thought of having coffee with cinnamon rolls there, visiting design museums, catching the Northern Lights in winter, and enjoying the incredibly long daylight hours in summer is absolutely thrilling. The only concern is that 14 flights per week seems limited – Rational Travel is already worried about ticket wars during peak seasons like Chinese New Year and summer vacation. The good news is I’m already practicing my ticket-booking speed! In any case, this new route is basically a gift from heaven for travel and food lovers like me. I can’t wait for the launch day to take a trip and see it for myself!

Helsinki Travel and Food Highlights: Finland is Waiting for You to Explore

Rational Travel thinks that if you’re going to fly to Helsinki, you’d better do your homework first. Helsinki is Finland’s capital and one of the chillest cities in Northern Europe. The airport (HEL) is only 20 kilometers from the city center, and you can reach the downtown area within half an hour by train or bus. What are the travel highlights? There’s Helsinki Cathedral and the White Church with their Nordic architecture that’s so aesthetically stunning you’ll want to take more Instagram photos. Then there’s Suomenlinna (Finnish fortress), where you can take a walk and feel like you’ve traveled back to the Middle Ages – super full of history. If you go in winter, you can head north to Lapland to see the Northern Lights. In summer, there’s incredibly long daylight – it’s still light at 10 PM, which is perfect for night owls.

As for food, Finland keeps things simple yet incredibly delicious. Salmon is a must-try, whether it’s grilled, cured, or raw. The freshness is unmatched, especially when paired with dark bread and butter – pure bliss. Cinnamon rolls (korvapuusti) are Finland’s national pastry, with such a strong aroma you’ll want to pack a dozen back to Taiwan. Then there’s reindeer meat – tender with a hint of gaminess that meat lovers will absolutely adore. The coffee culture in Helsinki is also strong. Simply sit down at any cafe and you’ll experience that slow Nordic lifestyle.

In terms of flights, Finnair currently uses the A350 for long-haul routes, offering comfortable seats and personal entertainment systems – a 12-hour journey shouldn’t be too difficult to handle. On Taiwan’s side, both China Airlines and EVA Air have long-haul main fleet aircraft (like the 777 or 787) with comparable comfort. Ticket prices haven’t been announced yet, but based on current Europe routes, expect single tickets to fall somewhere between 20,000-30,000 TWD. If there are promotional fares at launch, it’s definitely worth keeping a close eye out.

Rational Travel’s Take: Salmon and Cinnamon Rolls Are Calling – Is Your Luggage Ready?

Just thinking about Helsinki’s food and scenery has Rational Travel’s heart flying halfway there already. Salmon is something Rational Travel has eaten plenty of in Taiwan, but I’ve heard the freshness level in Finland is in a completely different league. I can already picture myself going wild with a fork stabbing at the fish. And those cinnamon rolls – hot ones fresh from the oven, paired with a strong cup of coffee, feels like I’m starring in my own Nordic lifestyle documentary with me as the protagonist, haha.

For travel, Helsinki’s laid-back pace really appeals to Rational Travel as a traveler who sometimes wants to just unwind. The cathedral and the fortress sound so relaxing, and with the chance to catch Northern Lights in winter, maybe even go skiing, that’s another item to check off the life list. The only thing is those 14 weekly flights feel a bit limited – Rational Travel is already worried about ticket wars. If launch period fares drop to under 10,000, I’m definitely booking first. My luggage is ready to be stuffed with Finnish snacks to bring back!

If Finnair really does fly in, Rational Travel secretly hopes they bring the A350, since having a comfortable seat on a 12-hour flight is pretty important. Taiwan’s airlines shouldn’t lose either – if China Airlines, EVA Air, or Starlux can offer killer prices and food packages, Rational Travel promises I’ll be one of the first to book. In any case, this new route is basically a win-win for travel and food lovers, and I can’t wait to personally take a trip and verify everything myself!
