Hello, high-five! I’m Rational Travel.
After finishing the previous article on Bali transportation “Red Zone” survival tactics, my inbox nearly exploded (yes, it was really that crazy), and everyone kept asking: “Rational Travel, I understand transportation now, but on Agoda every room is rated around 9 stars (yes, every single one looks amazing), the photos look like palaces—how do I actually choose?”

I understand your anxiety.
I can see you right now: you’ve got a dozen tabs open (yes, I know your browser is packed), your mouse hovering uncertainly over the “confirm booking” button (you just can’t click it, right?), thinking to yourself “Will this pool just be a photo fake?” “Will my parents complain so much my ears get calluses?” “Will staying here with friends kill the vibe at night?”
Don’t worry, this article is written for you.

We’re not looking at boring spec sheets today (yes, those are confusing anyway)—we’re breaking it down with the **”Travel Companion Theory.”** Are you bringing your girlfriend to survive? Bringing besties to take big photos? Or are you on a mission bringing a bunch of drunk friends on a graduation trip?
Trust me, picking the wrong hotel and your travel buddies will flip faster than you can turn a page (I’ve seen it happen too many times); pick the right hotel and you’ll be their hero.

- We drink and play music in the living room at night—what’s the soundproofing like? Will neighbors complain or call the police?
- Is that private pool really for swimming, or just a ‘foot bath’? Can you fit a giant unicorn float?
- Is the living room Bluetooth speaker loud enough? Or do we need to bring our own?
- It’s an open-air living room—at night when we’re hanging out drinking, will mosquitoes be overwhelming?
- Are Alami’s rooms all similarly sized? Or is one a luxurious master suite and another a tiny maid’s room?
- Does every bedroom have its own bathroom? Or will someone have to wait in line or run to the living room shower?
- If we’re an odd number (like 5 or 7 people), is the extra bed a real bed, or that hard-to-sleep-on army cot?
- Is the A/C cold enough? Because everyone’s body temperature is high from drinking, and if it’s not cold enough we can’t sleep.
- Are there convenience stores (Circle K or Indomaret) within a 5-minute walk to buy beer and snacks?
- Is the kitchen equipment ‘decorative’ or can you actually cook instant noodles with real pots and pans? Is there a big fridge to ice beer?
- Can you order Grab Food or Gojek delivery? Will the delivery driver find the address?
- Is breakfast cooked at the villa for us, or do we have to walk to a restaurant?
- You said it’s deep in the alley—can our charter car driver get to the entrance? Or do we have to drag luggage down a long path?
