⚠️ When the 5 cheap-flight strategies don’t apply
1. Travelers with truly fixed dates (work conferences, weddings, milestone events). The 5 strategies all rely on date flexibility. With locked dates, focus on the OTA mastery strategy only (which platform shows lowest fare for your specific dates), and accept that you’ll pay 20-40% more than a flexible-date traveler.
2. Travelers booking under 2 weeks before peak holidays. Last-minute strategies don’t apply during Lunar New Year, Golden Week, or summer Obon — fares are at ceiling regardless. Better fit: pivot dates to shoulder season (1 week before/after peak) where the same destination costs 30-50% less.
3. Long-haul travelers (12+ hour flights) prioritizing comfort. The cheap-flight strategies optimize for cost; for long-haul comfort (lay-flat seat, premium economy, decent meal), the 5 strategies don’t apply because the cheap-fare segment doesn’t include those amenities. Better fit: focus on miles redemption + status upgrade strategy — different optimization criteria.
