Rational Travel recently received mixed news from EVA Air – the Taipei-Munich and Taipei-Milan routes are welcoming a brand new “Fourth Generation Premium Economy” cabin, featuring Boeing 787-9 aircraft, set to launch on May 16, 2025. The good news is that this seat features a “quasi-business class” design, allowing you to enjoy near-business class comfort at economy fares – sounds like an amazing deal. The downside? The cabin configuration is changing from two classes (economy + business) to three classes (economy + premium economy + business), meaning upgrade certificates can no longer jump directly from economy to business class. Instead, passengers must upgrade to premium economy first, which could be disappointing for frequent flyer enthusiasts who rely on mileage upgrades. It’s definitely bittersweet.

EVA Air’s upgrade targets long-haul European routes, with Munich (MUC) and Milan (MXP) routes leading the rollout first, with flight times of approximately 13-14 hours. The fourth-generation premium economy cabin boasts enhanced space and service, paired with the 787-9’s low noise and fresh air circulation, making long-haul flights significantly more comfortable. Ticket pricing hasn’t been announced yet, but based on current premium economy fares, expect around TWD 50,000-70,000 including taxes – much cheaper than business class, yet considerably more premium than economy. The value proposition looks promising. Rational Travel thinks this change is a major win for travelers looking to enjoy premium comfort affordably, but for mileage enthusiasts, the upgrade path has definitely become more complex.

Rational Travel’s Take: Premium Economy Upgrade is Tempting, But Upgrade Certificates Just Became Useless!

When I saw this news, my first reaction was: “Wait, is EVA Air trying to force me to pay for premium economy?” The fourth-generation premium economy cabin sounds fantastic – with its quasi-business class design, a 13-hour flight to Munich or Milan shouldn’t leave you sore and achy. Getting near-business-class comfort at economy prices sounds incredibly appealing. But the downside is pretty obvious: upgrade certificates can’t bypass premium economy anymore. As a frequent flyer who relies on mileage upgrades, I’m definitely a bit disappointed. The upgrade path now feels like climbing stairs – you’ll need more strategic planning.

But looking at it from another angle, a 787-9 with the new premium economy cabin should be significantly more comfortable than older aircraft. Being able to sleep, eat, and relax better on a long European flight is still very attractive. With the May 16 launch coinciding with summer vacation season, I’m already planning trips to Munich for beer and Milan for pizza. The detailed pricing and mileage policies haven’t been announced yet, but I’m already refreshing the official website. Not trying out this new cabin would be a real shame!

Fourth Generation Premium Economy Details and Route Highlights

After doing some research, Rational Travel found that EVA Air’s fourth-generation premium economy cabin is installed on the Boeing 787-9, upgrading from the previous two-cabin configuration (economy + business) to three cabins. The 787-9 will feature approximately 230-250 economy seats, 30-40 premium economy seats, and 20-26 business class seats. The premium economy cabin emphasizes a “quasi-business class” experience, with estimated seat pitch of 38-40 inches (compared to 31-32 inches in economy), upgraded seat width and recline angles, plus individual leg rests and larger screens. The cabin service and meals reportedly approach business class standards. The 787-9 aircraft itself offers low noise levels and excellent air quality, ensuring comfort on 13-14 hour flights.

Route-wise, Taipei-Munich (BR71/72) and Taipei-Milan (BR95/96) each operate 4-5 flights weekly. Munich flies Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday, and Sunday, while Milan operates Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday. The new cabin launches May 16. Current economy fares to Munich are around TWD 35,000-40,000, with premium economy at TWD 50,000-70,000. Milan pricing is comparable, with inclusive fares fluctuating by season – the new cabin launch may bring promotional offers. Travel highlights include Munich’s famous beer festivals and Bavarian charm, while Milan offers world-class shopping and culinary experiences. Both cities connect easily to other European destinations via train, making them perfect for summer getaways.

Rational Travel’s Take: New Premium Economy Cabin is So Comfy, Here Comes Munich Beer!

I’m already daydreaming about flying the new premium economy cabin – with a 38-inch seat pitch, I can stretch my legs without them hitting the seat in front. Once that leg rest comes down, a 14-hour flight to Munich becomes a breeze. Landing and rushing to the beer festival to enjoy a German beer with roasted pork knuckles, or flying to Milan for authentic Italian pasta paired with tiramisu, then stuffing 23 kilos of luggage with chocolates and leather goods – sounds perfect. The new cabin design approaches business class standards, so meals should be upgraded too. EVA Air’s in-flight dining is already solid, so this could bring pleasant surprises. Just thinking about it makes my mouth water.

The downside is that upgrade certificates becoming a tiered system is a bit of a letdown. I originally planned to use miles for a direct upgrade from economy to business class, but now I need to rethink my mileage and pricing strategy. After the May 16 launch, the pre-summer period is prime time for European travel. Munich and Milan are both on my dream destination list, and skipping this new cabin experience would be doing myself a disservice. Pricing details and specifics are still awaiting official website announcements, so I’m ready to keep a close eye out and snag a good seat!
