The Vietnam Airlines TPE-SGN booking mistake I made: I’d seen the ‘international cheaper than domestic’ framing and immediately booked TPE-SGN at NT$5,400 for a December 2024 trip without checking domestic alternatives. What I missed: my actual destination was Phu Quoc (south Vietnam beach island), not Ho Chi Minh City — and SGN-Phu Quoc adds NT$1,800 + 75-min flight + 4-hour ground transfer to resort. My ‘international saving’ was offset by domestic-Vietnam connection costs. Net: I paid total NT$7,200 for international + domestic + transfer, vs Tigerair direct TPE-Phu Quoc at NT$8,400 — saving only NT$1,200, not the headline NT$3,000-4,000 figure. The fix: when comparing ‘international vs domestic’ fares, factor in onward routing for non-major-city destinations.

Honest talk! Vietnam Airlines’ price cut this time is absolutely crazy. Taipei-Ho Chi Minh 6508 TWD early departure late return, 23kg checked baggage is enough for me to stock up on souvenirs, and 12kg carry-on fits coffee perfectly. Post-Dragon Boat Festival on weekdays with OTA round-trip approaching 6K, the most aggressive price in recent years, applicable during summer vacation and Mid-Autumn Festival too, amazing value. Kaohsiung-Ho Chi Minh is 1.2K more expensive than Taipei, and 2K more than Hanoi. I’m prepared to grab May tickets to fly to Hanoi for bánh mì and explore the old town, then fly to Ho Chi Minh in October for drip coffee. I can’t sleep at night if I don’t grab these ticket prices.
