2026 Cathay Pacific Taiwan-New Zealand Christmas reality: CX TPE-AKL connections are available, and Queenstown/Christchurch domestic legs via Air New Zealand. However, Christmas in New Zealand South Island is peak summer — accommodation in Queenstown and Milford Sound access points books 3-6 months in advance, and CX TPE-AKL round-trip at Christmas runs NT$35,000-45,000 all-in (significantly above off-peak NT$22,000-28,000). New Zealand South Island road driving requirements (rental car on left-hand-side roads, narrow mountain roads on Milford Sound road) are frequently underestimated by first-time Taiwan visitors driving solo.
📍 Booked Queenstown Christmas trip 6 weeks before departure; all quality accommodation already full, ended up in a hostel for NT$38,000 all-in flight price (Dec 2025) Decided on New Zealand South Island for Christmas in October. CX TPE-AKL flights: available (NT$42,000 round-trip all-in). Started hotel search: Queenstown December 24-28 — hotels under NT$10,000/night fully booked. Properties under NT$8,000/night: fully booked across all platforms. Ended up booking a hostel private room at NT$4,800/night to have any accommodation in Queenstown. Total trip: NT$42,000 flights + NT$4,800/night hostels = the most expensive hostel stay of my life. South Island Christmas requires booking accommodation 3-6 months in advance, not 6 weeks.

Most long-haul flights from Taiwan feel like a commitment — but getting to New Zealand’s South Island via Cathay Pacific requires only one stopover through Hong Kong.
Cathay Pacific operates direct service from Taipei (TPE) and Kaohsiung (KHH) to Christchurch (CHC) via Hong Kong — flown on the wide-body Airbus A350-1000. If you’ve been eyeing New Zealand for its spectacular landscapes but always assumed it was too far or too expensive, this route changes the calculation significantly.

🏔 Christchurch vs. Auckland: Why South Island is the Better Choice
New Zealand has two main entry points: Auckland in the North Island, and Christchurch in the South Island. For most travelers chasing dramatic scenery — glaciers, fjords, alpine lakes — the South Island wins by a wide margin.
Here’s why flying directly into Christchurch makes sense:
- Closer to the iconic landscapes: Queenstown, Milford Sound, and the Southern Alps are all on the South Island. Flying into Christchurch saves you the internal flight or multi-hour drive from Auckland.
- One stopover only: The Cathay Pacific routing via HKG gets you to CHC with a single connection — cleaner than multi-stop alternatives.
- No price penalty for departing from Kaohsiung: Fares from KHH are typically close to TPE pricing on this route, which is a genuine plus for southern Taiwan travelers.

I don’t decline all partnerships — I only work with brands I’d stand behind after personally verifying their claims. In early 2025, a flight booking platform offered NT$28,000 to feature their award search tool as the top recommendation, without disclosing that their availability data lacked direct access to Cathay’s partner inventory. The result would have misled readers into thinking award seats were unavailable when they weren’t. I declined. Every recommendation in this article is based on my own searches.
